Exercise Science Club

How will this club meet the ASCOCC mission?

Currently there is no formal group for Exercise Science students at COCC to meet each other, learn about valuable internship opportunities, provide career opportunities & interviewing, develop study groups, and receive financial assistance for attending regional and/or national Sports Medicine / Exercise Science conferences. It is the intent of this club to contribute to individual student success both academically & career-wise. It has been shown that student academic success is highly correlated to social support and this would be an opportunity for exactly that. This club would also reach out to the community, especially to high school juniors and seniors with information about our COCC Exercise Science AS & AA degrees, one year personal training academic preparation, ACSM Personal Trainer Certification, and the COCC Physiology Lab.

Who will be the club advisor?

Julie Downing, Ph.D., Full-time Professor of Health & Human Performance & Exercise Physiology Lab Director at COCC since 1991.

Four current COCC Exercise Science students that would be involved:

  • Dave Cieslowski 383-7768
  • Tiffany Oster
  • Teal Bueler
  • Nicole Ziniker
  • Michelle Huillet

What is the club's annual budget?

We would start small our first year and plan to meet one evening per month in an open Mazama classroom. We would like to be able to bring in occasional speakers to address the club about career/internship Exercise Science opportunities. We would also like to be able to partially fund at least two students per year to attend the Northwest Regional American College of Sports Medicine (NWACSM) Annual Meeting. $500 total for the first year would be great. See next page for breakdown.

What is the club's budget breakdown?

Printing, Mail, etc. $ 200
Student Registration to NWACSM (up to 10 students) $ 500
Student Lodging for NWACSM $ 500
Community Projects $ 300
Speaker Honorariums $ 500

TOTAL $2000
